Obituary

John Lula Hicks was born February 15, 1936, in Bessemer, Alabama. She was the 4th child born to Celia L. and Walter B. Hicks.


John L. affectionally known as Aunt Johnnie, Aunt John L., & Sister Johnnie. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in
Lake Michigan by then Pastor Carlos L. Moody, Sr., becoming a dedicated member of Faith Temple Church of God in Christ. She
served faithfully under the leadership of the late Bishop Carlos L. Moody, Sr. and then under Pastor Carlos L. Moody, Jr. until sunset.


John L. was educated through the Alabama school system where she attended Elwood Elementary School and graduated from Hale
County Training School in Greensboro, Alabama. She attended College.

John L. had a strong work ethic enjoying employment, working at Kresge's Five & Dime, and The Clark Candy Company, both located in Evanston, IL before going back to Alabama. The trip to Alabama was needed to take care of her father after the passing of her mother. She returned to Evanston three years later following her father's death, and began working at Arens Control, Inc. where she gave 35 proud years of service before retiring.

Following her retirement, she became more active in her service to Faith Temple; she was a member of the Mother's Board, Deacon's Board, and taught Sunday School and she even volunteered with the church Food Pantry.

John L. was known for her love of walking, she refused rides from most everybody including her own brother and other relatives.

John L. departed this life on Sunday, May 21, 2023. Celia(mother) & Walter B.(father) Hicks, Eulia(sister) & John Phillips(brother-in- law), Adrene S.(sister) & Bugless Collins, Sr.(brother-in-law), William Y. Hicks, Sr.(brother) preceded her in death.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her brother Ralph Hicks, sister-in-law Susie Hicks (William Y., Sr.), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, close family friends, including her church family.
